AI and Collective Intelligence: Amplifier or Disruptor?

As I work at the intersection of AI, healthcare, and rare disease, I keep returning to one question: does artificial intelligence make us smarter together, or does it quietly erode the human conditions that make collective intelligence possible in the first place?

This is not an abstract question for me. It sits at the heart of what we are building at SHRARE, and more broadly at the heart of how I think about leadership, business, and innovation. Recently, I read the book The Collective Intelligence Catalyst by Cristina Bianchi and Maureen Steele, and one idea stayed with me: collective intelligence does not happen just because smart people, data, and tools are present. It depends on trust, listening, diversity of thought, and the ability to create space for people to contribute fully.

That immediately made me think of Artificial Intelligence. Because AI is powerful, and collective intelligence can be fragile.

In my view, whether AI becomes an amplifier or a disruptor of human capacity depends less on the technology itself than on the human qualities surrounding it. For me, three of those qualities matter most: love, emotional intelligence, and innovation.

Love is not a word many people are comfortable using in business or technology. I think that is a mistake.

By love, I do not mean sentimentality. I mean courageous care. I mean the disciplined choice to care deeply about people, about truth, and about the consequences of our decisions. I mean going beyond convenience, ego, or short-term gain in order to do what genuinely serves human progress. In leadership, love means listening seriously, challenging with integrity, and refusing to reduce people to functions, markets, or datasets.

That matters enormously in rare disease, where the stakes are deeply human and knowledge is radically fragmented. Relevant information is scattered across scientific publications, patient communities, clinical registries, regulatory documents, and specialist conversations. No single person can hold all of it. Not the best clinician. Not the best scientist. Not the most experienced executive.

This is where AI can play an extraordinary role.

AI can connect what is scattered. It can synthesise heterogeneous evidence, surface patterns across disconnected sources, and reveal relationships and pathways that would otherwise remain invisible. In a field where patient populations are small and the cost of missed insight is high, this can materially change what becomes possible. It can shorten the distance between evidence and action. It can help experts work from a richer and more coherent understanding of reality.

In that sense, AI can absolutely amplify human collective intelligence.

But only if we are careful.

Because the same technology that can elevate collective thinking can also flatten it. AI can create the illusion of understanding without the substance of it. It can compress complexity into elegant summaries that feel definitive too early. It can tempt leaders and teams to consume answers rather than think together.

Collective intelligence is not just the accumulation of information. It is what human beings do together with information. It is the quality of dialogue, the willingness to challenge assumptions, the capacity to hold ambiguity, and the openness and courage to let a better answer emerge.

If AI starts to replace that process rather than enrich it, we have a problem.

A team can look aligned simply because everyone has read the same machine-generated summary. But that is not necessarily alignment. It may only be uniform exposure to the same framing. Genuine collective intelligence is messier than that. It requires friction, interpretation, judgment, and emotional presence.

This is why emotional intelligence matters so much.

Emotional intelligence is not a decorative soft skill. It is one of the essential operating conditions for serious work. It is the capacity to read a room, notice what is not being said, understand tension without panicking, and create the trust required for people to speak honestly. It allows leaders to separate facts from emotions without dismissing either. Facts matter. Emotions matter too. Ignore one, and you distort the whole.

This becomes even more important in healthcare, where decisions can rarely be reduced to data alone. The judgment of a multidisciplinary group, researchers, clinicians, patients, and decision-makers, cannot be replaced by a machine, no matter how sophisticated it may be. AI can sharpen the input. It cannot assume responsibility for the decisions.

And this brings me to innovation.

Innovation is often misunderstood as novelty, speed, or technological sophistication. Real innovation is about creating something meaningful that genuinely improves reality. It starts with deep attention to a problem worth solving, and it succeeds when it helps human beings move forward in a better way.

That is why I do not see AI itself as the ultimate innovation. The deeper innovation is designing systems in which AI strengthens human judgment instead of bypassing it. Systems in which technology helps people ask better questions, listen better, collaborate better, and act with greater clarity and courage.

At SHRARE, that is how we think about our mission.

We are not trying to build a machine that tells people what to do. We are trying to build a platform that helps people think better together. A platform that brings together fragmented evidence, structures complexity, and supports better conversations and better decisions in rare disease pharma. The goal is not automated certainty. The goal is stronger collective judgment.

For me, this is where love, emotional intelligence, and innovation come together.

Love keeps us connected to why the work we do matters. Emotional intelligence creates the conditions for collective intelligence to exist at all. Innovation gives us the courage and the tools to create new possibilities in service of something better.

Used well, AI can strengthen all three. Used badly, it can weaken all three by making us faster, but shallower. More informed, but less reflective. More connected technically, but less human in the way we listen, choose, and lead.

So the question is not whether AI will shape collective intelligence. It already does.

The real question is which human abilities and capacities we choose to engage and cultivate when working with AI.

Because intelligence, in the end, is not only computational. It is relational. It emerges between people through trust, challenge, listening, discernment, and shared purpose.

I do not believe the future will be won by technology alone. I believe it will belong to those who can combine technological power with human depth.
